A Life in Songs is a deeply personal collection written and produced by Stephen Johnstone, bringing together songs shaped by more than two decades of his life.
The album reflects the experiences, relationships, difficult periods, love, loss, hope and personal growth that have influenced Stephen both as a person and as a songwriter. Rather than being written simply as a collection of tracks, each song carries a piece of a much bigger story.
Stephen wrote the songs and created the musical arrangements and productions, performing the instrumental parts himself apart from specialist elements such as the orchestral arrangements. The finished songs are performed through Dave James, the artist project created by Stephen to give this body of music its own distinctive voice and identity.
Musically, A Life in Songs moves through rock, soul, acoustic and cinematic influences, combining raw British songwriting with elements of Americana and emotionally driven production.
For Stephen, music has always been more than entertainment. It has been a way of processing life — turning experiences and emotions that can sometimes be difficult to express in words into something that can be heard and felt.
That is what A Life in Songs represents: twenty years of one songwriter's life, transformed into music.
